Your Lighthouse Score Isn’t Lying

Most Shopify stores score between 50 and 70 on Google Lighthouse. That’s the result of installing apps, never touching theme code, and assuming Shopify handles performance. It doesn’t. Shopify gives you a fast server and a CDN. Everything else is on you.

Google’s data shows each additional second of load time drops mobile conversion rates by 7–10%.

How to Check Your Score

Chrome → Right-click → Inspect → Lighthouse tab → select “Mobile” and “Performance” → Analyze. Key metrics:

• LCP: target under 2.5 seconds
• CLS: target under 0.1
• INP: target under 200ms

What’s Causing It

1. Third-Party App Scripts

Every app injects JavaScript. Klaviyo, Hotjar, chat widgets, review apps — each one adds a render-blocking script. A store with 8 apps can have 15–20 render-blocking scripts.

2. Unoptimized Images

A 4000×4000px photo displayed at 400px is transferring 10× more data than necessary. Hero banners are often 2–3MB.

3. Heavy Theme JavaScript

Premium themes ship with 400–600KB of JavaScript for animations and features that load on every page.

4. Too Many Apps

The average store has 6–8 apps. The fast ones have 2–3.

How to Fix It

Defer Third-Party Scripts

Wrap non-essential scripts in a setTimeout with a 3–5 second delay. This alone can improve your score by 10–20 points.

Lazy-Load Below-Fold Images

Add loading="lazy" to below-fold images.

Audit and Remove Apps

If you installed an app six months ago and aren’t sure what it does, remove it.

Preload Your LCP Image

A <link rel="preload"> for your hero image can shave 500ms–1s off LCP.
