SEO Is Evolving: What Is AEO and Why It Matters for Your Business

Search engines are no longer the only way customers find businesses online. AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Siri are answering questions directly — and if your business isn't optimized for them, you're invisible to a growing share of potential customers.

Search Has Changed. Has Your Business Kept Up?

Ten years ago, the goal was simple: rank on page one of Google. Build a website, stuff in some keywords, get a few backlinks, and customers would find you. That game still matters — but it's no longer the only game.

A growing number of people now start their search not on Google, but by asking an AI assistant a question. "What's the best web design agency in Toronto?" "Who does SEO for small businesses in Calgary?" "Find me a local plumber that's open on weekends."

If your business isn't showing up in those AI-generated answers, you're losing customers before they've even had a chance to find your website.

What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of making your website rank higher on Google and Bing when someone types a query. It involves technical factors (site speed, mobile-friendliness, structured data), on-page content (keywords, headings, meta descriptions), and off-page authority (backlinks, Google Business Profile, reviews).

SEO is still critical. Google processes over 8 billion searches per day. But the nature of those searches is shifting.

What Is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your online presence so that AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Apple's Siri, Microsoft Copilot — recommend your business when people ask relevant questions.

These AI systems don't show a list of blue links. They generate a direct answer, often citing one or two sources. If your business is cited, you get the lead. If you're not, someone else does.

How Is AEO Different from SEO?

SEO and AEO share a foundation — well-structured content, fast websites, clear business information — but they diverge in key ways:

  • SEO targets search result rankings. AEO targets AI-generated answers.
  • SEO relies heavily on keywords. AEO relies on authoritative, factual, well-structured content that AI can confidently cite.
  • SEO uses Google's algorithm. AEO works across multiple AI platforms with different training data and ranking logic.
  • SEO is established. AEO is emerging — meaning early movers have a significant advantage.

What Does AEO Actually Involve?

Effective AEO includes several overlapping strategies:

1. Structured Data (Schema Markup)

Adding machine-readable JSON-LD code to your website tells AI crawlers exactly what your business does, where you're located, what services you offer, and what customers say about you. FAQ schema, LocalBusiness schema, and Article schema are the highest-impact types.

2. Answer-First Content

AI systems prefer content that directly answers questions. Blog posts, service pages, and FAQs structured around common customer questions — with clear, direct answers at the top — are more likely to be cited.

3. llms.txt

A newer convention (similar to robots.txt) that provides a human-readable overview of your business for AI language models. SyncSpark includes this on every client site we build.

4. AI Crawler Access

Your robots.txt must explicitly allow AI bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, etc.) to crawl your site. Many older sites inadvertently block them.

5. Consistent Business Information

AI systems cross-reference your business information across your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, and directories. Inconsistencies reduce confidence and lower your chances of being cited.

The Canadian Context

AEO is global, but the opportunity for Canadian businesses is particularly strong right now. Most local competitors haven't started. The businesses that move first — even with modest effort — will establish the kind of AI-cited authority that's very difficult to displace later.

We're seeing this in local searches. When someone asks Perplexity "best digital agency in Vancouver," the businesses that have invested in structured content and schema markup are being cited. The ones that haven't are invisible.

Do You Need Both SEO and AEO?

Yes. They're not competing strategies — they're complementary. A well-built SEO foundation (fast site, quality content, Google Business Profile) makes AEO easier. And AEO work (structured data, answer-first content) often improves traditional SEO rankings at the same time.

Think of it this way: SEO gets you on Google page one. AEO gets you into the AI's answer. The businesses winning online in 2026 are doing both.

Where to Start

If you're starting from scratch, prioritize in this order:

  1. A fast, mobile-optimized website with clean code
  2. Google Business Profile fully filled out and verified
  3. Schema markup (LocalBusiness, FAQ, Service types)
  4. Answer-first blog content targeting your customers' real questions
  5. llms.txt and AI bot access in robots.txt
