AEO and SEO: What They Mean, How They Differ, and What to Do in 2026

AEO and SEO are not the same thing, and in 2026 you need both. Here is what each one does, where they overlap, and which to prioritize first for your business.

What Is AEO SEO? (The Short Answer)

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews to read, cite, and recommend. SEO gets you ranked on Google. AEO gets you cited by AI. In 2026 you need both.

They are not the same thing, and they are not competing. They are two separate channels, each requiring specific work, and the businesses that understand both have a compounding advantage right now.

What Is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of making your website rank higher on Google when someone types a query. It has been the foundation of online marketing for 20+ years and involves:

  • Keyword research and on-page optimization (meta titles, descriptions, headings)
  • Technical performance (page speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability)
  • Content creation (blog posts, landing pages, product descriptions)
  • Authority building (backlinks, reviews, Google Business Profile)

SEO is mature, well-understood, and competitive. Google processes over 8 billion searches per day. It is still critical. But it is no longer the only game.

What Is AEO?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your online presence so that AI assistants recommend your business when people ask questions. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, and Apple's Siri do not show a list of ten links. They generate a direct answer, usually citing one or two sources.

If your business is cited, you get the lead. If it is not, you do not exist in that conversation.

AEO involves:

  • Structured data (schema markup) so AI can read your site programmatically
  • Answer-first content that directly responds to common questions
  • An llms.txt file that gives AI a plain-text summary of your business
  • Consistent business information across your website, directories, and profiles
  • AI crawler access (not blocking GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot in robots.txt)

Do AEO and SEO Compete with Each Other?

No. They are complementary. The technical foundation that makes your site good for SEO (fast, well-structured, authoritative content) also makes it good for AEO. A well-built SEO foundation is actually a prerequisite for AEO.

A practical example: adding FAQPage schema to your product pages improves your chances of appearing in Google's Featured Snippets (SEO) and also gives AI assistants structured answers to cite (AEO). One investment, two channels.

Similarly, writing a blog post that directly answers "how much does Shopify SEO cost?" targets a Google search query (SEO) and becomes content that ChatGPT can reference when someone asks that same question conversationally (AEO).

Do I Need AEO If I Already Do SEO?

Yes. AI answer engines are a separate traffic surface from Google. A business can rank on page one of Google and still be completely invisible when someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question. They are different systems using different signals.

If your SEO foundation is solid, layering in AEO is the next highest-leverage move in 2026. Most of your competitors have not started. The businesses that move first accumulate AI trust signals that compound over time and become increasingly hard to displace.

Which to Prioritize First in 2026

Fix SEO fundamentals first. A site that Google cannot crawl properly will not be readable by AI either. If you have broken H1 tags, no meta descriptions, slow page speed, or no Search Console set up, those are the first priority.

Once the foundation is solid, layer in AEO: add schema markup, create an llms.txt file, write answer-first FAQ content, and verify AI crawlers can access your site. These are not separate projects. They are sequential layers on the same foundation.
